Deformity Correction

Through careful surgical planning, we correct bone and joint deformities to restore proper alignment, function, and your confidence in movement.

OVERVIEW

Understanding the Condition

We correct abnormal alignments like bow legs or poorly healed fractures by precisely identifying the deformity and restoring the body's normal mechanical structure.

What causes this condition?

Deformities can be congenital (present from birth), develop during growth due to conditions affecting the growth plate, or result from a fracture that healed in a misaligned position (malunion), as well as from conditions like rickets or metabolic bone disease.

Who is commonly affected?

Children and adolescents with growth-related deformities, and adults with old, poorly healed fractures or post-traumatic angular deformity, make up the two broad groups most commonly seen for correction.

Symptoms/indications to watch for

Visible bowing or angulation of a limb, an uneven or abnormal gait, one leg appearing shorter than the other, joint pain associated with abnormal loading, and difficulty with footwear or activity due to alignment are common indications.

Deformity Correction

How it quietly reshapes daily life.

Beyond the visible difference, deformities change how weight travels through the joints with every step — which over time can accelerate wear and pain in the knee, hip or ankle. Many patients, especially younger ones, also carry a quiet self-consciousness about how the deformity looks, which correction can meaningfully address alongside the mechanical problem.

Daily Life

When Should You Consider Deformity Correction?

Correction is typically considered when the deformity is progressing, causing pain or abnormal joint loading, significantly affecting gait, or is severe enough to risk long-term joint damage if left untreated — assessed through clinical examination and imaging to map the precise nature of the deformity.

TREATMENT OPTIONS

Non-surgical approaches

Mild deformities, particularly in growing children, may be monitored over time with regular follow-up, as some correct naturally with growth. Bracing may be used in select cases to guide alignment during growth.

When surgery becomes necessary

Surgery is considered when the deformity is significant, progressive, causing pain or functional limitation, or unlikely to self-correct with growth — with the specific procedure depending on the patient's age, the cause, and the degree of correction needed.

What happens during the procedure?

Depending on the case, correction may involve a controlled bone cut (osteotomy) to realign the limb, followed by fixation with plates, screws or an external frame, or, in growing children, a guided growth procedure that gently corrects alignment over time as the child grows. Surgical planning relies heavily on precise pre-operative imaging to map out the exact correction needed.

BENEFITS

What Patients Often ExperienceAfter Treatment

Correcting alignment relieves abnormal stress on the joints, improves gait and appearance, and reduces the long-term risk of early arthritis from uneven loading. Most patients, particularly children, go on to enjoy normal activity and joint health well into adulthood.

If knee pain continues to affect your daily activities, sleep, or mobility despite medications, physiotherapy and lifestyle modifications, knee replacement may be an option. A detailed evaluation can help determine the most suitable treatment for your condition.

Recovery depends on the injury and procedure. Many patients return to light activity within a few weeks and to full sport over a structured rehabilitation programme tailored to their goals.

Most patients begin guided movement soon after surgery, progress through physiotherapy, and steadily regain function over weeks to a few months with the right support.

Yes. Many cases are managed with medication, physiotherapy, lifestyle changes, activity modification and injections. Surgery is recommended only when conservative options no longer provide relief.

We listen to your history, examine you, review any imaging and discuss honest options. You leave with a clear understanding of your condition and the path forward.
